He liked it so he put a ring on it!
For awhile we had been talking about the possibility of getting married a year earlier then what we originally thought. At first I was hesitant, worried about all the things that would come with getting married while still in school. But then I realized fear shouldn't be the only reason to not do something. After that I was completely on board! Cory on the other hand (or so I thought) wasn't sure yet. He said he wanted to pray and think about it more. So I waited...and waited. But then....
Cory
came down for a four day weekend from school. I could tell that
something was on his mind so I asked him what was going on. He sadly
told me that he didn't think that we would be able to get married in a
year, he really wanted to, but just had no money for a ring. (I had told
him in the past I didn't care if the ring cost 100 bucks, but he said
there was no way he was going to ask the most important question in his
life with a cheap ring. What a romantic.) So I assured him that it was
ok, it must not be meant to be if we both weren't feeling the same way.
The
next day we decided to go for a little hike. Earlier in the week was
sweetest day (you know that holiday that everybody forgets. I'm pretty
sure it was made up by Hallmark) and of course, he forgot. (I only
remembered because it was on someone's Facebook status.) I jokingly said
I was mad that he forgot such an important day, so he decided that we
should go on a "date" and he wanted to get me a present. I said no, I
didn't want him spending money. He replied that he would make me
something. So I was expecting a letter or something along those lines.
The day was absolutely beautiful. We walked to the top of a hill, sat on a bench and he pulled out of his backpack (which he had been closely guarding) a big black journal. He told me I must start from the beginning and not look ahead. In the journal he had made a timeline of our relationship. He pasted old pictures, receipts, letters, and he wrote little notes here and there. I thought it was uber cute :) I started thanking him, as I was talking I flipped the pages, and it fell open to the middle where he had cut out a heart, and tied the ring to the bottom.

My
mouth fell open I was so surprised! I had been duped! I remember
thinking "Oh, why is a ring in there? Weird place for a ring." Then it
hit me; duh Shayna! I just sat there staring at that little ring with my
mouth open so wide my gum almost fell out. He got off the bench and got
on one knee and said "I love you more than anything in the world and I
want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?" I think I
said yes. I can't remember, I was in a fog.
On Friday October 21st, 2011 Cory Wesley Jones asked Shayna Nicole Sherbondy to be his wife.
She said yes.
I wanted to ask Shayna to marry me as soon as I could, but I didn’t know how soon it would actually be. God ended up opening a lot of doors which made it all possible. Early October was when I finally felt like God was telling me it was time, so I talked to my parents some more and they gave me the go. There was just one problem; I had no money, at all. My parents were very gracious and gave me some money towards a ring though. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be getting married yet.
So I’ve had this engagement idea in my head ever since I was a young teenager. I just thought of it one day when I was around 14 and never planned on changing it. Since the day I met Shayna, I knew she was the one. So it was at that point, I already started the engagement process. I collected everything and anything we ever did with each other, all without her knowing too. I even kept these two little seeds that she gave me the first week we met, and she told me to keep them forever. Little did she know, I actually was planning on doing that all ready.
So after a year and some of dating, in early October I started on this project. I was making a book or a timeline of our life from the start. It included pictures and everything I had from receipts to drawings to movies tickets to letters and anything she’s ever made me. For the next two weeks, I was up till 4 am almost every night working on my project. It was the only time I could do it because of school, work and homework. I found the perfect ring, which I chose by myself and some of my mother’s advice. I bought it and it was being sent to me a.s.a.p. During the week before I was planning on asking her, I was trying to think of a smooth way to do it without her knowing. Well Shayna set it up for me by introducing me to “Sweetest Day”. It was perfect.
After that, I worked on the book and was just waiting for the ring. Three days before I was about to pop the question and there was no ring. Then it was two days, then the day before I was going to leave and still no ring. Finally the day I was supposed to be leaving for her house and there was still no ring. If you can imagine with me how I’m feeling at the moment, FREAKING OUT. I was supposed to leave at 3:30 pm, but I didn’t know what to do. Pacing back and forth, I finally got an email telling me it had arrived. 3:25 pm I received it, five minutes before I had to leave. I didn’t have time to tie the ring in the back of the book in the cut out heart I made. So I waited till that night when Shayna was asleep and did it. All ready to go.
Earlier that night Shayna asked me what was going on. She always can sense when something is wrong with me, or I’ve been thinking about something, or stressed out, or sad, worried; pretty much any emotion. Well she asked me, and as quick as possible I said “just school.” Well she didn’t buy that, so I had to use some whit and get her emotions involved, cause then she would believe me. So I made this sappy story up about wanting to get married but not having a ring and no money. Inside I was cracking myself up; I’m a pretty good actor. She bought it and comforted me. She was so cute.
Then the next day, you know the rest of the story; the beautiful day, the walk, and then the big question. I was so relieved to finally ask and not hide the surprise anymore. She said yes! I was so filled with happiness and excitement, and at the same time, exhausted from being up so late for so many nights. Ok, I’ll admit it, I cried. Not a lot, but I did. I quickly wiped them away on Shayna’s shoulder before she could see, but she still knew.

His Story:
So how did we get engaged? Well everyone has heard the story from Shayna’s point of view, but what about mine? I'm so thankful that I had decided to bring my camera and tripod.
Best day ever. (so far)
